MS's Chip's Challenge sometimes crashes!
Yes, this is a well-known fatal bug in the program. It happens whenever Chip steps onto a square that already has two "transparent" objects on it (for example, a creature on top of a key). The program eithers GPFs, or the window might went blank and unresponsive, or in some case, you might actually really screw up Windows and have to reboot.

The problem was due to a stack overflow error, so the exact behavior you observe can be somewhat unpredictable. It is usually avoidable (by not going to the problem squares). On the original level set for example, only level 104 (Jailer) seems to be prone to this problem.

Don't worry, as far as I know, no one has lost their scores or passwords because of this bug. Sometimes you might wound up back at level 1 when you restart the program, but in that case it should still remember the passwords of all the levels you have completed, so you should be able to go back to where you were at.

A fix is available if you want it. E-mail ccexplore@yahoo.com, and he'll e-mail you a patch program you can use to fix that bug, while leaving all other aspects of the game engine intact.
